Lesotho and Zambia have booked their place in Sunday’s final of the 2023 HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Cup after coming through tense semifinal matches at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Friday.
Lesotho beat Malawi 3-0 on penalties after the teams played to a 1-1 draw, while defending champions Zambia knocked out hosts South Africa with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory.
They now chase a record seventh COSAFA Cup title, while Lesotho make their second final and first since 2000, when they lost to Zimbabwe.
COSAFA has confirmed the prize money for the tournament with the winners to take home R500,000 and second place R250,000. The team that finished third will receive R150,000 and furth gets R100,000.
There will also be individual player awards worth R20,000 each for Player of the Tournament, Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Top Goalscorer.
South Africa striker Tshegofatso Mabasa had not scored a goal for club or country since September before he bagged a brace in the final group game against Eswatini.
He followed that up with another goal against the Zambians, reacting quickest to the loose ball in the box after Chipolopolo goalkeeper Francis Mwansa could only parry a shot.
Mabasa rifled the rebound into the back of the net to move to the joint top of the scorers’ charts in the competition with three.
But Bafana Bafana conceded an equaliser five minutes after halftime and it was a really poor goal to concede.
They allowed the ball to bounce around in their box as they failed to clear from a long throw and Golden Mashata was able to hook a shot into the net from close range.
The winning goal was worthy of claiming any tie as Albert Kangwanda placed a 30-yard free-kick into the top corner of the South African net, giving goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela no chance.
He too has three goals in the competition and is joint top of the scorers charts having had an outstanding campaign to date.
Ten-man Lesotho had to weather a Malawi storm as they played for 45 minutes a man down when Motlomelo Mkwanazi was sent off for a second bookable offence just before halftime.
By that time both teams had scored. Jane Thaba-Ntso put Lesotho ahead with his sixth COSAFA Cup career goal as he tapped home at the back post after a brilliant take and cross from Neo Mokhachane, who is having a stand-out tournament.
Malawi levelled from the penalty-spot as Mkwanazi handled the ball in the box to earn his first yellow card and Chawanangwa Kaonga equalised from 12 yards.
Lesotho goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane proved the hero of the shoot-out as he made three saves and the more fancied Malawi will have to settle for a shot at the bronze medal.
Fans are reminded that the third-place play-off between Malawi and South Africa, which kicks off at 15h00 on Sunday, will have FREE entrance with limited tickets on a first come, first served basis.
The same is true for the final between Lesotho and Zambia that will start at 18h00 CAT.

Le Lesotho et la Zambie pour une finale explosive
On connait désormais les finalistes de l’édition 2023 de la Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup. Le match du titre opposera le Lesotho à la Zambie ce dimanche au King Zwelithini Stadium à partir de 18h. La petite finale se disputera entre le Malawi et l’Afrique du Sud. Les Lesothans ont eu recours aux tirs au but pour passer, le score étant de 1-1 au bout du temps réglementaire alors que les Chipolopolos l’ont emporté sur le fil (2-1).
Même si dans un sens la première demi-finale semblait être équilibrée, il faut admettre que le Malawi partait légèrement avec les faveurs des pronostics. Les Flames ont bouclé la phase de groupe avec neuf unités au compteur et n’ont surtout pas pris de buts. En face, le Lesotho a subi une défaite en groupe et encaissé quatre buts.
Mais le football se joue surtout sur le terrain et sa beauté réside justement dans le fait de pouvoir faire taire les pronostics. C’est ce qu’a fait le Lesotho. Ce dernier a d’ailleurs pris le match à son compte en ne mettant que 18 minutes pour trouver le cadre. C’est Thaba qui en est l’auteur. Il a inscrit son premier but dans la compétition et sans doute l’un des plus précieux.
Toutefois, cette légère avance n’allait pas durer et le Malawi a voulu montrer qu’il n’est pas resté invaincu jusqu’ici pour rien. A la 26e minute, les Flames bénéficiaient d’un pénalty. Kaonga s’avançait pour transformer la sanction et rétablir la parité. A parti de ce moment, le match s’emballait et les deux formations obtenaient plusieurs opportunités pour tuer le match. Mais à mesure que les minutes s’égrenaient, il devenait évident que c’est l’épreuve des tirs au but qui allait dévoiler le finaliste. Sans doute crispés, tous les joueurs du Malawi manquaient leur tir. La précision était du côté du Lesotho qui transformait toutes les occasions.
Le Malawi s’est, en partie, consolé avec le titre d’homme du match qui est revenu à Chimwemwe Idana. Ils tenteront de ne pas rentrer bredouille dimanche en tentant de remporter la petite finale.
Le choc du dernier carré opposait les deux nations les plus prolifiques dans le tournoi, à savoir l’Afrique du Sud et la Zambie. Ce dernier a connu un début de compétition laborieux mais c’est désormais de l’histoire ancienne. Dans le match du dernier carré, les Zambiens, champions en titre, ont dû faire face à une redoutable opposition de la part des Bafana Bafana.
Les locaux ont contrôlé le match et ont été récompensés de leur effort juste avant la fin de la première période. C’est Mabasa qui a ouvert le score. C’est d’ailleurs sa troisième réalisation dans le tournoi. Mais au retour des vestiaires, les Chipolopolos montraient un autre visage. Plus conquérant et tranchant. D’aileurs, sur une belle inspiration, Mashata ouvrait le score à la 50e minute. Kangwanda donnait ensuite la victoire aux Zambiens en trouvant la faille à la 69e minute. Kelvin Kapumbu, le capitaine de la Zambie, obtenait, lui, le titre d’homme du match.
Lesotho e Zâmbia disputam final do COSAFA-2023
As selecções do Lesotho e da Zâmbia, disputam este domingo, às 18.00 horas, no King Zwelithini Stadium, a final da 22ª edição da Taça COSAFA-2023, enquanto que Malawi e a sua congénere da África do Sul medirão forças entre si, na luta pelo terceiro lugar, no mesmo local, quando forem 15.00 horas.
Com efeito, nas meias-finais, o Lesotho levou de vencida a sua similar do Malawi na marca das grandes penalidades (3-0), depois do empate a uma bola no período regulamentar. Por conseguinte, a campeã Zâmbia, derrotou a África do Sul por 2-1, com os golos a serem apontados por Mashata (50´) e Kangwanda (69´), enquanto Mabasa marcou o tento de honra a passagem dos 43 minutos.
Os “Chipolopolos” (Zâmbia), seguiram as “meias” como a segunda melhor classificada de todos os grupos, passando por um susto na fase de grupos, com a surpreendente derrota consentida diante do Malawi por 1-0, enquanto isso o Lesotho seguiu como a melhor classificada do Grupo C.
A Zâmbia é o país com o maior registo de participações nas meias-finais (17) e legrou erguer o troféu em seis ocasiões à semelhança do Zimbabwe que em breve regressará as emoções.
Entretanto, no seu percurso nas provas da COSAFA, o Lesotho chegou às meias-finais em quatro torneios (2013, 2017, 2018 e 2019), mas ficou aquém das expectativas. O país terminou em terceiro lugar em 2018, e quarto em 2017 e 2019. Chegaram à final em 2000, mas perderam para o Zimbabwe (3-0).
Sekhoane Moerane: o herói do Lesotho
Foi o quinto encontro entre o Malawi e o Lesotho. No que ao confronto directo diz respeito as duas nações, o favoritismo recai para os “Flames”, que venceram 12 dos 21 jogos disputados com o Lesotho, contra quatro vitórias dos “Crocodiles”, com os demais empates.
O Malawi, por sua vez, teve um percurso imaculado na fase de grupos tendo feito o pleno, incluindo três partidas consecutivas sem sofrer golos nesta edição. Há que destacar que os malauianos foram invictos em cinco jogos em todas competições.
Por outro lado, o Lesotho entrou para este jogo vindo de uma derrota sofrida diante de Angola, depois de duas vitórias anteriores sem sofrer golos.
Com um forte apoio do público que afluiu em massa ao King Zwelithini, em Umlazi, Malawi puxou de si lançando o aviso à navegação nos instantes iniciais. Mas, os comandados de Leslie Notsi, técnico do Lesotho trataram de desfazer a narrativa segundo a qual os “Flames” possuírem a defesa intransponível do torneio, justificando, deste modo, o facto de não terem sofrido nenhum golo na fase regular.
Rápidos nas transições defesa-taque, o Lesotho esteve próximo de inaugurar o marcador aos dois minutos, mas o golo de Neo Mokwachane foi tirado em cima da linha de golo por um dos centrais, deixando algumas dúvidas… a rigidez da defensiva foi colocada à prova aos 18 minutos, num lance em que bola parte do meio-campo, num passe em profundidade que recai a Neo, que sem hesitar faz centro para o toque letal de Jane Thabantso (18´). Estava feito o 1-0.
Em resposta, sete minutos depois, os “Crocodiles” reduzem o placard por intermédio do artilheiro Chawanangwa Kaonga (25´), na cobrança de uma grande penalidade, após o defesa Motlomelo Mkwanazi, ter tocado a bola com a mão no interior da grande área, daí o inevitável cartão amarelo. Emotivo, disputado até o limite, assistiu-se a uma acirrada disputa pela bola entre as duas equipas e, numa dessas acesas lutas, o Lesotho acabou ficando reduzida com menos uma unidade em campo. Motlomelo Mkwanazi (44´) viu o seu segundo cartão amarelo e foi expulso!
Sem golos na segunda etapa, o desafio acabou sendo decidido na lotaria das grandes penalidades, tendo o guarda-redes do Lesotho, Sekhoane Moerane, sido o herói do jogo ao defender três bolas e sentenciado com o golo que conferiu vitória ao seu conjunto. Foi épico, emotivo e inesquecível tarde de futebol em Umalzi.
A última vez em que o Malavi participou de uma semifinal da Taça COSAFA data de 2003.
