Tough weekend for COSAFA clubs in Confederation Cup

It was a tough weekend of action for the COSAFA clubs competing in the African Confederation Cup play-off round with only one managing to taste victory.

Mozambique outfit UD Songo claimed a handsome 3-1 success over Al-Hilal Al-Ubayyid, but will face a difficult away tie in Sudan to advance to the pool stages after they let in an away goal in the final minute.

South African side BidVest Wits were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Nigerian club Enyimba as they missed a number of chances to go into the second leg with a lead.

As has been the norm they fielded a number of fringe players, but still should have come away with the win.

Compatriots SuperSport United lost 1-0 in Kenya against Gor Mahia, but will be confident of overturning the scoreline at home, even if the potentially crucial away goal eluded them.

Zambian side Zanaco were beaten 2-0 at home by Moroccans Raja Casablanca and now face an uphill battle in the second leg in North Africa.

It was even worse for Madagascan club Fosa Juniors, who took an early lead, but then lost 6-1 to Aduana Stars from Ghana in Dormaa Ahenkro. There would appear no way back for them.

And finally, Mozambican side Costa do Sol lost 3-0 to Rayon Sports from Rwanda and despite having the home leg to come, have a mountain to climb if they are to turn the tie around.

The second legs will be played on April 17-18 with the winners of the ties advancing to the pool stages of the competition.
