Malawi to debut at COSAFA Women’s Under-17 Championship

Hosts Malawi will be making their debut at the COSAFA Women’s Under-17 Championship having sat out the three previous years for a variety of reasons.

They will stage the Region 5 Games Lilongwe 2022 this year and so have home field advantage for the competition, where there will be high hopes they can come away with a medal.

This competition is a brave new era for Malawian football, with the country having never before entered a women’s Under-17 team into the continental qualifiers either.

The hope will be that this can be the start of regular competition on both a regional and continental stage, and a stepping-stone for the girls into international football.

Malawi have excelled in senior women’s football and were finalists at the COSAFA Women’s Championships in 2021. There is no doubt there is a pool of talent in the country.

This is typified by sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, who have excelled with professional careers outside of the continent.

There are likely many more such talents in the country and competitions such as the COSAFA Women’s Under-17 Championships give them the opportunity to unearth these gems.
