Kenya aim for knockout stages at Under-17 champs

East African guest nation Kenya have named their squad for the 2017 COSAFA Under-17 Championship in Mauritius from July 22-31.

Under new German technical advisor Andres Spier, Kenya are hopeful of going deep into the tournament and have narrowed down their squad to those players they believe can get them into the knockout stages.

“Our target is at least to get out of the group stage,” Spier told reporters. “We know we are going to meet very tough teams from the COSAFA region but again it is a good platform for us to gauge ourselves and see what we need to do to improve.

“This team has grown every day from when I took charge. Technically and tactically, they are now better.”

Spier is also preparing for the country’s 2017 African Under-17 Championships qualifier against Cameroon, the first leg of which is one week after the final of the COSAFA tournament.

Kenya have been drawn in Group B at the COSAFA Under-17 Championships and open their campaign against Zambia on Friday.

They then take on Madagascar on Sunday, before their final pool match against Malawi on July 26.

Only the top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinals, with the final to be played on July 31.
