COSAFA teams out of qualifying for Women’s Under-20 World Cup

There are no more COSAFA representatives remaining in the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup after the region’s last remaining sides bowed out at the weekend.

Zambia were narrow 1-0 losers in Ghana to go down by the same scoreline on aggregate, while South Africa could not overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their tie with Uganda.

They were held to a goalless draw in the second leg in Soweto and do not advance.

The region’s third representative Botswana lost 8-2 to Ethiopia after they went down 5-1 in the second leg in Addis Ababa.

With only two sides advancing to the finals in Costa Rica, it was always going to be a tough ask. No Southern African side has yet reached the finals in this age group since the competition was first played in 2002.

The remaining eight sides will see Tanzania tackle Ethiopia in the next stage of qualifying, while Uganda meet Ghana, Morocco play Senegal and Cameroon do battle with Nigeria.
