Zimbabwe have booked their place in the semifinals of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations | COSAFA Qualifier in Matola on Monday after a 1-0 victory over hosts Mozambique that sees them top Group A.
Botswana were held to a 0-0 draw by Eswatini and now face an anxious wait to see if they will take the best runner-up prize, which will be decided at the conclusion of the two other pools on Tuesday.
Zimbabwe have seven points at the top of the group, followed by Botswana (5 points), and eliminated Eswatini (4) and Mozambique (0).
The calculation for second place in the pool means that the results against the bottom side in the two four-team groups are discarded, putting Botswana effectively on two points in that race.
That means that should there be a winner between Namibia and Zambia in the three-team Group B on Tuesday, Botswana will be out.
If that game finished in a draw they stay alive, and there are a set of circumstances in Group C where they can both advance and be ousted.
Eswatini blew a golden chance to put themselves into semifinal contention when they missed a penalty deep into the second half of their 0-0 draw with Botswana.
Malwande Gwebu was fouled outside the box but the referee adjudged the contact had been inside and awarded the spot-kick.
Alakhe Mdluli stepped up to take the penalty but saw his effort saved by Botswana goalkeeper Frank Seleke Low to his right. Eswatini also had a chance from the follow-up but the ball flashed wide.
Zimbabwe have joined Angola in the semifinals after beating already eliminated Mozambique 1-0.
It was a compact game with both teams struggling to penetrate each other in the attacking third and going into halftime with one shot on target in Zimbabwe’s favour.
But Enock Moyo opened the scoring for Zimbabwe just a minute into the second stanza to give his side the lead that they held on to.
Only the top team in each pool advances to the semifinals along with the best-placed runner-up, with the two finalists qualifying for the continental finals that are due to be played next year.
Those in turn will act as the African preliminary tournament for the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile, with the continent to have four representatives.

Le Zimbabwe poursuit l’aventure
Rideau sur le groupe A où le Zimbabwe est parvenu à s’extirper en remporter son ultime match 1-0 contre le Mozambique. Un petit but d’Enock à la 46e minute a été suffisant pour rejoindre les demies. Le Zimbabwe a jusqu’ici montré un visage serein dans ce tournoi et attendra de connaitre son adversaire désormais. En revanche, grosse déception pour les Mozambicains devant leur public. Ils quittent la compétition sans le moindre point décroché.
Dans le même temps, le Botswana et l’Eswatini se sont quittés dos à dos (0-0). Pourtant, les occasions ont fusé des deux côtés et on peut comprendre pourquoi. Le Botswana – avec cinq points – pouvait encore prétendre à une qualification tout comme l’Eswatini. Les échanges ont été d’un bon niveau mais cela n’a pas été suffisant pour débloquer la situation.
Il n’y a plus d’enjeu dans le groupe B où l’Angola s’est facilement qualifié après deux victoires de rang. D’ailleurs, les Angolais ne jouent pas ce mardi. Avec six points, ils débarquent dans le dernier carré avec l’étiquette de favoris aux côtés de l’Afrique du Sud. Du coup, ce mardi, la Zambie affrontera la Namibie à midi. Les deux équipes n’ont plus rien à espérer dans cette compétition car ils ont vraiment mal démarré la compétition enchainant deux revers de rang. Avec aucun point au compteur, Zambiens et Namibiens ne peuvent même pas espérer terminer meilleur deuxième.
Deux rencontres auront se disputeront simultanément dans le groupe C. Le Malawi affronte le Lesotho alors que les Comores croisent le fer avec l’Afrique du Sud. Les Sud-Africains possèdent déjà six points dans ce groupe et devraient – sauf catastrophe – passer ce tour. Les Comoriens avaient idéalement démarré leur campagne avant de chuter. Ils ne peuvent plus se permettre de laisse filer le moindre point. En face, les Sud-Africains ont déjà inscrit 11 buts dans ce tournoi et n’en n’ont pris aucun.
Dans l’autre match, le Malawi devra se défaire du Lesotho. Après deux sorties marquées du sceau de la déception, le Lesotho espère se reprendre pour ne pas rentrer bredouille. Pour leur part, les Flames du Malawi ont trois points dans la besace et peuvent toujours croire au prochain tour.
Zimbabwe vence Moçambique e confirma presença nas “meias”
Missão cumprida! A Selecção Sub-20 do Zimbabwe confirmou,hoje, a sua presença nas meias-finais das eliminatórias qualificativas para o Campeonato Africano das Nações (CAN)-2025, da região do bloco dos países do Conselho das Associações da África Austral (COSAFA), após vencer a sua similar de Moçambique por 1-0,graças ao golo solitário do meio-campista Enock Moyo, marcado a passagem do minuto 46. O duelo estava inserido na terceira e última jornada do Grupo A.
Com o precioso triunfo, os “Young warriors”, nome de guerra do Zimbabwe, aproveitaram-se do empate no jogo entre Botswana e Eswatini (0-0), terminando a prova com sete pontos, enquanto Botswana e Eswatini, segundo e terceiros classificados, somaram cinco e quatro pontos, respectivamente e Moçambique na cauda sem nehum ponto.
Os zimbabweanos juntam-se aos angolanos, que asseguraram, ontem, a sua presença na fase eliminar em representação do Grupo B.
De resto, este feito marca o regresso do Zimbabwe a fina flor do futebol juvenil, depois de dois anos ausentes das provas internacionais, após um embargo imposto pela Federação Internacional de Futebol (FIFA).
Dia das decisões
É já amanhã que será conhecido o cruzamento das equipas que seguirão às meias-finais, em particular no Grupo C, uma vez que, pelo Grupo B, Angola garantiu a sua presença na fase eliminar.
A vitória de Angola por 1-0 sobre a Namíbia assegurou que liderassem o grupo de três equipas com seis pontos, enquanto Zâmbia e Namíbia se defrontam amanhã, procurando manter vivas as suas escassas esperanças de um lugar nas meias-finais.
No entanto, na série C, a África do Sul, que à entrada desta ronda assume a liderança isolada com seis pontos, terá pela frente às Comores, segundo classificado com três, pelo os sul-africanos precisam apenas de um empate para seguir em frente, embora teoricamente a equipa esteja apurada. A África do Sul é até aqui a selecção com o melhor ataque da competição com um saldo de 11 golos marcados sem sofrer nenhum.
A fechar a jornada, Malawi que conseguiu arrancar três pontos frente as Comores na ronda anterior, acalentou alguma esperança e, seguramente que de tudo fará para vencer, amanhã, a já afastada selecção do Lesotho. O jogo terá lugar às 15:00 horas, no Campo Número 2 da Arena Lalgy, no Município da Matola, Moçambique.
Frisar que o regulamento da competição determina que apenas o vencedor e o segundo melhor classificado dos três grupos apuram-se às meias-finais da prova, enquanto que as duas equipas que chegarem às finais da competição preliminar regional seguirão para a fase continental do próximo ano, que por sua vez, servirá de qualificação para a Taça do Mundo– 2025 a ser realizada no Chile.
Quatro selecções africanas estarão representadas no “Mundial” e a região da África Austral espera ter duas, depois de Angola, África do Sul e Zâmbia terem representado a região no passado.
