The technically-proficient Zimbabwe thrashed Eswatini 5-1 in a Group B game they dominated in all thirds of the field at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto Campus Stadium, while Zambia began their title-defence with a 8-0 victory over Namibia in a high-intensity match played at the same venue on Thursday.
There was also a 4-0 victory for South Africa over Botswana in Group C, while Mauritius and Comoros copuld not be separated at 0-0 on day two of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations | COSAFA Qualifier.
Zimbabwe started on the front foot giving Eswatini all sorts of problems. With his trickery, Tadiwa Chakuchichi cut inside from the right, took on a few defenders before beating the Eswatini goalkeeper, Luyanda Ndlovu, at the near post to give Zimbabwe a well-deserved lead in the 21st minute.
Four minutes later, striker El Shaddai Sadomba doubled Zimbabwe’s lead after playing the ball over onrushing Eswatini goalkeeper. Chakuchichi was at it again when he cut inside before playing a pass to Sadomba who did not disappoint and tapped the ball into the net in the 34th minute to score his second of the day.
In the 41st minute, Sadomba completed his hat-trick after taking advantage of a poor clearance by Eswatini.
In response to Zimbabwe’s dominance in the first half, Eswatini defenders launched quick counter-attacks by playing long passes into the final third in those rare moments they managed to regain possession. However, all their efforts in counter-attacking were in vain as Zimbabwedefenders reacted speedily to intercept those passes.
Zimbabwe were still the better team in the second half although Eswatini were energetic and eager to score despite conceding four goals in the first half.
In the 86th minute, attacking midfielder Valentine Macheka netted the last goal for Zimbabwe after placing a beautiful shot at the far corner. Substitute Menzi Dlamini scored a consolation goal for Eswatini in the 90th minute.
In the second match of the day in Group B, Mapalo Simute of Zambia scored his first goal in the first minute. On four minutes, Simute netted his second goal from a rebound to send the Zambia spectators at the stadium into a frenzy. Zambia were quick both on and off the ball and Namibia struggled to contain them although they launched a few counter-attacks after winning the ball deep in their half.
Zambia dictated matters in midfield where Vincent Mutondo was operating. Also, Felix Phiri and Simute troubled Namibia’s full-backs with their speed and movements on and off the ball. In the 43rd minute, Abel Nyiringo scored a header from a Jonathan-Kalamina’s long diagonal pass. In the 46th minute, Vincent Mutondo scored a fourth goal for Zambia.
Three minutes later, Jonathan Kalimina added his name on the scoresheet to net a fifth goal for Zambia. Gabriel Phiri scored another goal for Zambia in the 82nd minute and added the other in 87th minute. Phiri completed his hat-trick in the 90th minute.
South Africa were handsome winners in Group C as they overwhelmed Botswana, with new sensation Emile Witbooi, recently returned from trials at Cheslea, among the scorers.
Selwyn Stevens, Neo Bohloko and Kamohelo Maraletse were also on target in a dominant display from the home side that showed all their potential in the competition.
Comoros and Mauritius could not be separated though as they played to a goalless draw.
All games at the competition will be streamed live on FIFA+, and you can follow the action from this dedicated tournament page.
Meanwhile, Defending champions South Africa opened their 2024 COSAFA Under-17 Girls Championship with a 4-2 win over Malawi at UJ Auckland Park Stadium.
Leonay Kock was the star of the show for the host nation scoring a hat-trick on her way to getting the Player of the Match award.
She opened her account after 20 minutes and netted the third and fourth goals for Bantswana, while captain Katleho Malebana converted a first half penalty for the side.
Meanwhile Malawi’s consolation goals came off the boots of substitute Asimenye Mwanyongo and Fatima Lali in the second half.
The result sees South Africa second in Group B with three points behind leaders Madagascar, who thrashed Namibia 5-0 in the second game in the group played the UJ Stadium in Soweto.
The Islanders scored four goals in the opening half through Oliva, Vola, Louisa and Angele. They added a fifth in the second half through Jiscaniah, who scored just after the hour mark.
Madagascar lead the group with healthier goal difference and a clean sheet, while Malawi are third followed by Namibia at the bottom with no points.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe defeated Mauritius 2-1 in a Group C opener also played in Soweto. First half goals from Anna Njere and Chedza Khumalo were enough to give Lindiwe Ndlovu’s charges maximum points and pole position in the group. Mauritius wasted chances in front of goal to get back into the game with Marie Clair scoring their only goal also in the first half.
Day Three will open with a Group C match between Zambia and Botswana at 11h00 followed by the second Group B match between Comoros and Lesotho at 14h00 both matches to be played in Soweto.
