Tanzania will tackle Angola in the final of the AUSC Region 5 Games Men’s Under-17 competition after both came through tense semifinal clashes on Friday.
The pair will clash for the gold medal on Sunday, while vanquished semifinal losers Zambia and Eswatini play for the bronze medal, seeking some consolation from the tournament.
Tanzania sealed their final place after edging Zambia 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out after the teams had been locked at 1-1.
The East African side led when Zambian defender Vincent Chate turned the ball into his own net seven minutes before halftime, but the Young Chipolopolo hit back just before the hour-mark when Manna Chiswe found the back of the net.
Tanzania held their nerve in the shoot-out to advance to Sunday’s decider, where they will take on an impressive Angola outfit, who are also the reigning COSAFA Under-17 Championship holders after they lifted the trophy in Mauritius in July.
Angola edged Namibia 1-0 in their semifinal, despite playing the final 30 minutes with only 10 men after a red card for Domingos Andrade.
The pivotal moment came on 73 minutes as Angola hit Eswatini on the break and Abdoul Barri supplied a neat finish for his second goal of the tournament.
Saturday will see the completion of the Women’s Under-20 competition when hosts Botswana take on South Africa in the final (15h00).
Both teams will feel confident of victory after excellent tournament’s so far, while South Africa are seeking to retain the title they won two years ago when they beat Namibia 5-0 in the decider.
The bronze medal will also be decided when Zimbabwe clash with Namibia at 10h00. Both matches are at the University of Botswana Stadium.
