South Africa name squad for 2018 COSAFA Cup

South African coach Stuart Baxter has stuck to his word and selected a mostly youthful squad for the 2018 COSAFA Cup to be played on home soil from May 27-June 9.

Baxter wants to use the competition to blood new players at senior level, hoping to find some gems ahead of the resumption of the 2019 African Nations Cup qualifiers in September.

The likes of Luther Singh (Sporting Braga, Portugal), Siphesihle Ndlovu (Maritzburg United), Aubrey Modiba (SuperSport United), Gift Links (Al Alassiouty, Egypt) and Innocent Maela (Orlando Pirates) will all play in the tournament with that in mind.

Maritzburg’s run to the final of the Nedbank Cup has also seen Fortune Makaringe and Lebogang Maboe join Ndlovu in the squad, along with experienced centre-back Siyanda Xulu.

There is a first call-up for Cape Town City defender Taariq Fielies, as well as two more promising young defenders in Siyabonga Ngezana (Kaizer Chiefs) and Motjeka Madisha (Mamelodi Sundowns).

Singh could well be the lead forward, with teenager Lyle Foster (Orlando Pirates) and Ryan Moon (Kaizer Chiefs) also in the squad.

Gift Motupa, who recently moved to Chippa United and scored two penalties for South Africa in the 2016 final as they beat Botswana, makes a return to the squad.

He has an impressive five goals in his last five appearances for the national side, as has nine caps in all.

South Africa will enter the competition at the quarterfinal stage on June 3, where they will face the winner of Group A that includes Madagascar, Mozambique, Comoros and Seychelles.
