South Africa book FIFA Under-20 World Cup place with Burundi win

COSAFA side South Africa won through to the semi-finals of the African Under-20 Championships following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burundi in their final Group A clash at the Stade de Maradi on Friday.

The win sees South Africa finished second in their pool behind Nigeria and they will now take on Group B winners Senegal in Wednesday’s semi-finals.

The side have also qualified for the 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Poland in May, their second successive visit to the global showpiece event after they also appeared in South Korea in 2017.

The victory was earned via a penalty from midfielder Luke le Roux after just eight minutes following a foul on striker James Monyane.

Kobamelo Kodisang almost doubled the advantage when his shot was parried onto the post, while Burundi created numerous opportunities but could not get the ball into the back of the net.

Amajita will appear at the Under-20 World Cup for a fourth time after previous showings in 1997, 2009 and at the last tournament in South Korea in 2017.
