New league season gets underway in Mozambique

Mozambique will get their new league season underway this weekend, having given up on efforts to start the 2020 campaign after its kick off suspended by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MocamBola, traditionally played inside a calendar year, gets underway on Saturday with the Associação Desportiva Vilankulo hosting Ferroviário Nacala.

The rest of the first round games will be played on Sunday with the last champions Costa do Sol, coached by the Portuguese Horácio Gonçalves, at Ferroviário da Beira.

UD Songo, who were knocked out of the African Confederation Cup last weekend, are also fancied for the title and have a tough start at Ferroviário Maputo.

Newly promoted Associação Black Bulls, in the top flight for the first time, also have a foreign coach in Portuguese Hélder Duarte, and begin their campaign at Ferroviário Nampula.

Costa do Sol won the 2019 title by six points over Songo. The last MocamBola match was played in December 2019.
