Mozambique eye Beach Soccer World Cup as Uganda loom

Mozambique will clash with Uganda in the semifinals of the 2021 CAF Beach Soccer Cup of Nations on Friday with not just a place in the final up for grabs in Senegal.

The winner will also secure a place at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup that is scheduled to be played in Russia in August.

It would be a debut for Mozambique at the global finals and another major milestone for the association after they won their first ever COSAFA event late last year by capturing the Men’s Under-20 Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay.

But first they must get past East African side Uganda, who qualified for the semifinals in the three-team Group A. The pool was reduced to that size after DR Congo withdrew before the competition.

Uganda lost 5-1 to hosts and defending champions Senegal in their opener, but then edged Tanzania 4-3 to secure second spot.

Mozambique romped through their pool unbeaten with a full haul of nine points, topping the group ahead of Morocco, who meet Senegal in the other semifinal.

The latter will likely be the favourites for the title in the eyes of many, but Mozambique will be gunning for glory and perhaps fancy their chances given their form.

Should they advance to the final it will be played on Saturday.
