Mozambique exit TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025

Mozambique’s campaign at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 came to an end on Monday as they suffered a 4-0 Round of 16 defeat to Nigeria, a result that confirmed their exit from the tournament.

The Mambas knew they faced a formidable challenge against one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses and were under early pressure as Nigeria asserted their authority. Despite some initial defensive resistance, Mozambique were undone midway through the first half when Nigeria found the breakthrough via Ademola Lookman.

Falling behind forced Mozambique to chase the game but doing so left them increasingly vulnerable at the back. Nigeria capitalised clinically, adding a further goal via Victor Osimehan before the interval to effectively put the contest beyond reach.

For Mozambique, it was a punishing first-half spell that proved decisive, as they struggled to cope with Nigeria’s pace, movement and physical presence in the final third.

Osimhen added a third shortly after the break, before Akor Adams also found the back of the net for the Super Eagles.

While the result was painful, Mozambique can still take positives from their return to the continental finals.

They recorded a first ever win with a 3-2 success against Gabon, and a first visit to the knockout stages in what has been a historic campaign.

The tournament provided valuable experience for a squad that mixed youth with seasoned campaigners, and there were moments across the group stage that highlighted the team’s potential when able to impose their style of play.
