It was a mixed weekend for the COSAFA sides competing in the 2016 FIFA Under-20 World Cup qualifying campaign with two wins and two defeats.
Zambia claimed a 4-0 victory in Tanzania that will leave them as heavy favourites for the return in a fortnight’s time.
That has almost certainly set up a meeting in the next round with South Africa, who were 8-1 winners over fellow Southern African side Botswana.
The clash between South Africa and Zambia will be a titanic clash between arguably the two best sides from the region.
Namibia were the other COSAFA side in action but were 4-0 losers in the DR Congo, leaving them with plenty of work to do in the return fixture.
First round results:
Algeria 1–2 Burkina Faso
Cameroon 0–0 Ethiopia
Equatorial Guinea 4–0 Mali
Ghana 6–0 Senegal
DR Congo 4–0 Namibia
Liberia 1–7 Nigeria
Tanzania 0–4 Zambia
South Africa 8–1 Botswana
