Lucy Kajiya scored two goals as Zambia came from behind to defeat Botswana 3-1 in the opening game of the Girls’ Under-17 football tournament at the Region 5 Youth Games Maseru 2020 on Thursday.
Zambia had missed a penalty in the second half as they dominated the play, but finally found their winning goals late on through Jessy Zulu, who had time and space to pick her spot as the Botswana defence floundered, and the excellent Kajiya.
The match is the first in the three-team Girls competition that also features Namibia, and Zambia were full value for their win after overcoming a difficult start.
Serati Modisenyane put Botswana in front just before the half-hour mark as her cross from wide on the left floated all the way into the goal at the far post.
Zambia equalised four minutes after the break when a mix-up between defender and goalkeeper allowed Kajiya to steal in and put the ball in the back of the net.
Kajiya was then fouled to give Zambia the chance to claim a second from the penalty-spot, but Zangose Zulu put the ball well over the crossbar from 12-yards.
It mattered little in the end as Jessy Zulu scored her goal, and then Kajiya netted a brilliant second as she danced through the Botswana defence and applied an excellent finish.
Friday will be a rest day at the competition, but the action resumes with three matches on Saturday.
The Girls’ competition will see Namibia make their entrance when they on Zambia at 10h00 CAT (08h00 GMT), hoping to get under way with a win that will give them one foot in the final.
The two sides that finish in first and second position in the mini-league will play in the decider on Monday.
Later in the day there will be two matches in the Boys’ competition, starting with a Group B clash between Angola and Botswana at 13h00. The latter drew their opener with Botswana on Wednesday and will probably feel they need a win to advance.
Angola will make their tournament bow, with the top two teams in each pool moving on to the semifinals.
Eswatini will play their first game in Group A when they tackle Zambia at 15h30. The Young Chipolopolo were excellent as they defeated hosts Lesotho 2-0 in their first game. They will know that a point will be enough to see them into the next stage. The Boys’ semifinals and final will be played on Tuesday.

La Zambie a un pied en finale
La Zambie a fait un pas de géant vers la finale de la Region 5 Youth Games Maseru 2021 U17 girls. Jeudi, les Young Copper Queens ont facilement pris la mesure du Botswana qu’elles affrontaient au Setsoto Stadium (3-1).
Aucune erreur n’est permise dans ce tournoi féminin. Avec seulement trois formations en lice, chaque point pris compte car seul les deux premiers disputeront la finale prévue pour le 6 décembre.
Pourtant, l’entame a été plutôt laborieuse pour les Zambienne qui se sont d’abord fait surprendre à la demi-heure de jeu par Modisenyane (28e). Mais le vent a tourné en seconde période après une égalisation signé Kajiya (55e). Alors que l’on se dirigeait vers le partage de points, Zulu permettra à son équipe de passer devant (83e). Kajuya signera ensuite son doublé presqu’au bout du temps réglementaire.
La Zambienne Jessy Zulu a été auréolée du titre de joueuse du match au bout des 90 minutes d’engagement. Elle a surtout été récompensée pour son impact dans l’entrejeu et surtout sa lucidité dans les passes.
Aucune rencontre n’est au programme de ce vendredi. Les équipes participantes auront donc un jour pour se reposer. Et du repos justement elles en auront besoin car le programme de samedi s’annonce chargé mais surtout déjà décisif pour certaines équipes.
Déjà chez les filles, la Namibie affronte le Botswana au Setsoto Stadium. Après leur match de jeudi, les Zambiennes doivent encore convaincre. Si elles parviennent à obtenir un succès, elles seront assurées de disputer la finale prévue le 6 décembre. En face, la Namibie n’a pas encore débuté sa campagne. Les Namibiennes auront à cœur de réaliser une belle entame histoire de ne pas raté leur début.
Il y aura beaucoup d’actions chez les hommes également avec deux duels au programme. En match d’ouverture, l’Angola croisera le fer avec le Botswana. L’Eswatini jouera ensuite face à la Zambie. Le Botswanais visera le rachat après leur nul inaugural face au Malawi. Pour les Young Chipolopolos en revanche, il sera question de confirmation.

Kajiya bisa na reviravolta da Zâmbia
A Selecção feminina sub-17 de futebol da Zâmbia levou de vencida a sua congénere do Botswana por 3-1, na jornada inaugural do Grupo A, da oitava edição dos Jogos da região 5 do Conselho de Desporto da União Africana (AUSC R5), que decorrem em Maseru, capital do Reino do Lesotho.
Dois nos depois a Zâmbia e o Botswana voltaram a cruzar o mesmo caminho por ironia do destino. Em 2019, a Zâmbia levou a melhor sobre este adversário na disputa pela medalha de bronze, tendo vencido por 3-0, numa edição realizada nas Ilhas Maurícias.
No reencontro de hoje, coube a Zâmbia tomar as rédeas do jogo criando a primeira situação de perigo quando estavam jogados apenas 15 minutos. A atacante Jessy Zulu que evolui no Pataaki Football Club da Zâmbia não teve a frieza e discernimento suficiente para inaugurar o marcador.
E, como quem não marca arrisca-se a sofrer, a equipa orientada por Oaitse Moeti, seleccionador do Botswana acreditou em si e chegou ao golo a passagem do minuto 28, por intermédio de Serati Modisenyane, após desferir um petardo na zona de linha de fundo, onde a bola foi fixar-se nas malhas contrárias. Foi com a vantagem no marcador que as duas equipas foram ao intervalo.
À entrada para a segunda parte, um erro de comunicação entre uma das centrais e a guarda-redes do Botswana abriu espaço para a Zâmbia chegar ao golo da igualdade a passagem do minuto 49, Lucy Kajiya, teve o sentido de oportunidade atirando a contar.
A Zâmbia ainda beneficiou de uma grande penalidade, mas Zangose Zulu errou o o alvo na cobrança do castigo máximo. Ainda assim, a Zâmbia conseguiu redimir-se da situação chegando ao segundo quando estavam transcorridos 85 minutos. Lucy Kajiya voltou a destacar-se ao apontar o segundo golo já no apagar das luzes (90´). Foi uma autêntica reviravolta protagonizada pelas zambianas.
O histórico dos confrontos entre as duas nações remota desde o ano de 2012, onde a Zâmbia uma vez mais saiu triunfante ante as tsuanas. Nesse ano, a Zâmbia e o Botswana esbarraram-se nas eliminatórias da corrida ao Mundial da categoria e as zambianas venceram com o agregado final de 7-1, após vitórias por 5-1 e 2-0.
Já em 2013, agora na corrida para o Campeonato Africano, a Zâmbia voltou a repetir a proeza, desta feita ao vencer o mesmo adversário com o agregado de 8-3 (5-2 e 3-1). Em 2018 inverteram-se os papéis, desta vez foi o Botswana que esteve na mó de cima a arrancar uma vitória suada sobre a Zâmbia por 6-5, no desafio da primeira “mão” , sendo que na segunda venceram por 4-0.
Por conta das restrições impostas pela pandemia da covid-19, o que levou a desistência de alguns países, verificou-se uma redução notável do número de equipas na presente edição. Dispostas num só grupo (A), composto por quatro equipas, avançam para a final o primeiro e o segundo classificado, que jogam no dia seis do mês corrente.
Entretanto, depois da entrada triunfal na jornada inaugural do Grupo B do Campeonato masculino de sub-17, após vencer o anfitrião Lesotho (3-0), a Zâmbia volta a entrar em cena amanhã, no Setsotso Stadium, pelas 15.30 horas, medindo forças com o Eswatini, este que realiza o seu primeiro jogo e, que quererá arrancar os primeiros pontos necessários para se manter na prova. Até o momento a Zâmbia lidera à condição a pauta classificativa com três pontos.
A anteceder a esta partida, Angola terá pela frente o Botswana (13.00 horas), este último que vem de um empate frente ao Malawi (1-1) na abertura dos jogos do Grupo A.
De acordo com o regulamento, disputam as meias-finais o vencedor do Grupo A e o segundo melhor do Grupo B, enquantoque o primeiro classificado do Grupo B medirá forças com o segundo melhor classificado da série A. A final está agendada para o dia sete (7), às 18.00 horas, no Setsotso Stadium.
