The historic 20th edition of the COSAFA Cup gets under way in Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday in what looks the most open competition for years as several countries bring experimental squads packed with young talent.
It has largely been easy to pick out the favourites in previous years as the likes of Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa flex their muscles, but this time round there is an element of uncertainty given the composition of the teams.
But that will make for intriguing viewing and with plenty of rough diamonds to be discovered in the squads from across the region and beyond, there will be plenty of interest from fans, scouts and clubs to grab the ‘next big thing’.
Senegal will also add an element of flair and skill to the line-up as they debut in the COSAFA Cup, bringing with them the best of the young talent in their local league.
No guest nation has managed to lift the COSAFA Cup in the past and they will see this as a real opportunity to make history.
Record six-time winners Zimbabwe will be in the mix with their much-changed squad that features players on the fringes of selection for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers that resume in September, and they will see this as a real chance to shine and stake a claim.
Defending champions Zambia are also without many regulars but are always competitive, while South Africa have overcome a host of challenges to assemble a team that few fans will recognise.
It will give the likes of Mozambique, Botswana and Lesotho a chance to claim a first ever title, or perhaps for Namibia to grab their second after their stunning triumph in 2015.
The matches get under way on Tuesday when Eswatini take on Lesotho at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium at 14h00 (SAST), a magnificent 2010 FIFA World Cup venue that is a fitting stage for the tournament’s start.
South Africa and Botswana will contest the other Group A game at 17h00, with both knowing that a positive beginning to the competition is imperative. That is because only the top team in each pool is assured of a passage to the semifinals, along with the best-placed runner-up.
Group B is a three-team pool with Zambia, Malawi and Madagascar, while Group C contains Senegal, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Namibia.
In order to level the playing field in the calculation for that best runner-up position, the results against the bottom sides in Groups A and C will be discarded. This is only to determine the best runner-up across the pool, the winners of each group will be decided using all games.
The group stages will end on July 14, with the semifinal matches to be played two days later. The competition final and third-place play-off will be staged on July 18.
No fans will be allowed into the venues, while the teams and officials at the competition are locked down in a strict bio-secure environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

L’histoire est en marche
Une édition historique qui sera disputés dans des conditions particulières. Pas inscrite au calendrier de 2020 à cause de la pandémie du coronavirus, la COSAFA Cup refait son apparition au calendrier de cette année (6 au 18 juilet) à Port-Elizabeth. Et elle s’annonce historique malgré le contexte puisque cette compétition célèbre sa 20e année d’existence en 2021. La succession de la Zambie, dernier vainqueur en 2019, est ouverte.
Le coup d’envoi de la compétition sera donné à 14h au Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. L’Eswatini affrontera le Lesotho en match d’ouverture. Le pays hôte, en l’occurrence l’Afrique du Sud, croisera ensuite le fer avec le Botswana à 17h. Les quatre pensionnaires de la poule A espèrent idéalement débuter le tournoi.
La meilleure performance l’Eswatini remonte à 2016 lorsque ses représentants s’étaient adjugé la troisième marche du podium. Le Lesotho, pour sa part, a failli marquer l’histoire. C’était en 2000. Se retrouvant en finale après un excellent parcours tout au long de la compétition, les Lesothans ne pourront toutefois pas résister au Zimbabwe qui s’imposera finalement 6-0 au cumulé.
Après ces performances des deux nations, les prochaines éditions passeront plus ou moins inaperçues puisque l’Eswatini et le Lesotho ne parviendront jamais à tirer leur épingle du jeu. C’est donc un duel pour le moins équilibré qui attend ces deux pays enclavés en Afrique du Sud. Et autant dire qu’ils se connaissent bien, étant géographiquement proche. Toutefois au niveau des confrontations sur le rectangle vert, difficile de parler d’hégémonie pour l’un ou pour l’autre.
Les deux pays ne se sont croisés qu’à trois reprises dans la COSAFA Cup. Léger avantage au Lesotho qui a remporté deux duels contre uniquement un pour l’Eswatini. L’explication de ce soir pourrait rétablir la parité ou au contraire confirmé la suprématie du Lesotho sur son voisin.
La suite du programme de ce mardi s’annonce plus explosive. En effet, nous aurons droit à un duel entre l’Afrique du Sud et le Botswana. Les deux pays se connaissent parfaitement. Toutefois en neuf confrontations avec l’Afrique du Sud, le Botswana n’est jamais parvenu à s’imposer face aux Bafana Bafana. Les Zèbres ont été tenus en échecs à quatre reprises et ont été battus en cinq occasions.
Le pays hôte a été sacré à quatre reprises dans l’histoire de la compétition. Toutefois, malgré une multitude de joueurs talentueux, le dernier sacre des Bafana Bafana remonte à 2016. Le Botswana, très athlétique et puissant dans les duels, ne fait pas honneur à sa réputation toutefois. Les Botswanais n’ont jamais accroché une étoile de la COSAFA à leur maillot. Ils ont été finaliste en 2016 et en 2016 sans jamais pouvoir poser la main sur le trophée.

É já amanhã (terça-feira) que arranca a XX edição do Campeonato Sénior Masculino de Futebol do Conselho das Associações de Futebol da África Austral (COSAFA), que este ano tem como palco, a cidade portuária de Nelson Mandela Bay, o “berço” do Campeonato Feminino! Depois de um ano sem competição por conta da pandemia ca covid-19, a festa do futebol da região volta a ribalta com muitas surpresas.
Com efeito, as selecções do Eswatini e Lesotho medem forças entre si, quando forem 14:00 horas, na jornada inaugural do grupo “A”, no Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, enquanto que a anfitriã África do Sul, que também está no mesmo grupo, terá pela frente o Botswana, pelas 17:00 horas, no mesmo recinto.
Já na quarta-feira, Madagáscar e Malawi têm o encontro marcado às 15:00 horas, na abertura dos jogos para o grupo “B”, por sinal único a realiza-se. Já o grupo “C” entra em cena no dia seguinte, quinta-feira, com as selecções de Moçambique e Zimbabwe (12:00) a abrirem as hostilidades entre si, no Isaac Wolfson, para três horas depois, no mesmo terreno, a convidada Senegal defrontar a Namíbia, pelas 15:00 horas.
Anotar que o Senegal, país convidado da África Ocidental, fará sua primeira aparição no certame e vai levar o talento e a força daquela região do continente.
A 20ª edição da competição vai envolver um total de 12 selecções nacionais, divididas em três grupos de quatro cada. O Grupo “A” integra África do Sul, Lesotho, Eswatini e Botswana, enquanto no Grupo “B” vão competir a campeã em título, Zâmbia, Malawi, Madagáscar e Comores.
Segundo o regulamento da prova, apenas os primeiros classificados de cada grupo apuram-se às meias-finais e o segundo melhor classificado de todos os grupos. Este cenário permite com que cada selecção realize três jogos até um máximo de cinco, o que proporcionará uma preparação importante para as selecções envolvidas nas eliminatórias para o Campeonato do Mundo de 2022, no Qatar, com início previsto para Setembro próximo.
O Zimbabwe (seis vitórias) lidera a tabela de conquistas, seguido por Zâmbia (cinco), África do Sul (quatro), Angola (três) e Namíbia (uma).Moçambique, Malawi e Botswana foram finalistas duas vezes, mas acabaram por perder nas duas ocasiões. Lesotho (2000) é a única outra selecção que chegou à final sem sucesso.
A fase de grupos terminará no dia 14 de Julho, com os jogos das meias-finais a serem disputados dois dias depois.
