COSAFA boosts goalkeeper coaching in the region

COSAFA recently held a Regional Goalkeeper Coaching Course for tacticians from around Southern Africa to refresh their skills on getting the best out of those players between the sticks.

It proved a huge success, led by legendary goalkeeper coach Alex Heredia, who is also a FIFA and CAF Instructor and has worked with top clubs and associations in the region for decades.

“I have really enjoyed this initiative of COSAFA to bring coaches from the 14 countries together to learn,” Heredia said. “This is the type of work we should be doing in the region. This was the first workshop like this, but I hope there will be more in the future.

“We are sharing our knowledge, and I believe that the coaches will truly benefit from this course.”

Each COSAFA Member Association was able to send one male and one female coach for the six-day course, which includes theory and practical sessions. Twelve of the 14 MAs took part, all except Lesotho and Comoros.

The course was driven by a lack of keeper coaching courses in the region, and the COSAFA Technical and Development Committee requested the implementation.

Notable attendees included Kalililo Kakonje, who was an Africa Cup of Nations winner with Zambia in 2012.

This is one of several initiatives from COSAFA to coach the coaches, with another their recently announce partnership with the International Soccer Science & Performance Federation (ISSPF).

Find out how you can boost their coaching knowledge through one of their many courses, or by taking the COSAFA Diploma in Football Science & Coaching.
