Chambeshi likely to have only two foreign-based stars for COSAFA Cup

Chipolopolo coach Beston Chambeshi has hinted that striker Fashion Sakala and Polokwane City midfielder Salulani Phiri may be his only foreign-based call-ups for the 2018 COSAFA Cup.

Sakala, of Spartak Moscow 2 in Russia, is already training with Zambia at its Lusaka camp after joining the team on May 23 while midfielder Emmanuel Banda of Belgium club KV Oostende, who is also in the country, will not be considered.

“We are looking at maybe calling up Salulani Phiri. I have a meeting with him on Thursday so we will see,” Chambeshi said.

“Emmanuel Banda is also in but is out with an injury but will look at Fashion (Sakala).

“But (Justin) Shonga and Augustine (Mulenga) are not in our plans.”

Both Salulani and Sakala featured prominently for Chipolopolo during the Four-Nations Cup Zambia hosted in March and finished runners-up behind Bafana Bafana.

Chambeshi added that he is looking forward to the Zesco United call-ups finally joining camp before the weekend after they attended to two league obligations last Sunday and on Wednesday.

“The Zesco players; John Chingandu and Lazarus Kambole should be in by the end of the day on Thursday,” Chambeshi said.

Zambia kickoff their 2018 COSAFA Cup campaign on June 2 with a quarterfinal date against Namibia at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Both sides enjoy preliminary round byes at the tournament South Africa will host from May 27 to June 2.
