Brave Zambia head home after narrow Brazil loss

Brave Zambia have dropped out of contention at the Tokyo Olympics women’s football competition after a 1-0 loss to South American giants Brazil in their final pool match on Tuesday.

Andressa scored the only goal of the game for the Brazilians, who played most of the match against 10 players after Zambian centre-back Lushomo Mweemba received an unfortunate red card on 13 minutes.

Zambia still held their own as they had a number of opportunities to equalize, with the dangerous Barbra Banda a constant threat for their opponents.

The Copper Queens will return home after taking one point from their three games, which was earned in a thrilling 4-4 draw with China. They also lost 10-3 to the Netherlands.

The performances showed the potential of the team against some of the strongest sides in the world and provided an excellent platform from which to build.

They will be in action in the COSAFA Women’s Championship that is set to be held in Nelson Mandela Bay in September.
