The Angolan Football Federation have named provisional squads for the COSAFA Men’s Under-17 and Under-20 Championships that will take place in South Africa’s Nelson Mandela Bay over the next month or so.

Both competitions serve as zonal qualifiers for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in the two age-groups, which in turn are the qualification tournaments for the respective FIFA World Cups.

Forward Ambrosini Salvador headlines the Under-20 group after he finished top-scorer in the 2019 COSAFA competition with six goals as Angola took third place.

A number of other players will return this year as well, including midfielders Bevindo Afonso and Santos Kiaku, and forward Tangu Gastao.

The championships will be played from December 3-13, with Angola having been drawn in Group C along with Eswatini and Botswana.

Only the top team in each pool and the best placed runner-up advance to the semifinals, while the two finalists will book their place in the continental showpiece competition.

The Under-17 squad will be in action before that with their tournament to be played from November 19-29, hoping to regain the trophy they won in 2018.

Players from that side such as striker Abdul Barri have now moved up to the Under-20s, meaning it is a fresh start for the team that finished last time round.

This year they will have Zimbabwe, South Africa and Eswatini in a tough Group A, with the same format as the Under-20s that sees only the top teams in each pool and the best placed runner-up advance to the next stage.

Once again, the two finalists will advance to the continental competition.
