Angola make COSAFA Beach Soccer Championship return

Angola will make a return to the COSAFA Beach Soccer Championship after missing out in 2022 and hope to better their best ever finish, which was a semifinal place in 2021.

The team won both group games three years ago as they defeated hosts South Africa 4-1 and then edged Seychelles 8-6 in a thrilling second encounter.

That set up a semifinal with east African guest nation Tanzania, who eventually triumphed 5-2 to earn a berth in the final.

It was still a strong showing from Angola and suggested there is much potential in the side.

Camadjo and the uniquely named End-Cole scored four goals each in that tournament and were the dangermen for the team, but Paulo and Nuno also impressed in a squad that was packed with physical and skillful players.

The team this year will be led by coach Peterson Vieira Dias, with the stated aim of being in the top three finishers in Durban, looking to at least match their mark of three years ago.

The team has been preparing at the Centro Técnico Nacional do Sequele in Luanda with a squad of 14 selected following trials under the watchful eye of Dias.

The team has yet to qualify for the African Beach Soccer Cup of Nations, and that will definitely be an aim in the coming years as they look to show improvement in a format of the sport that is fast growing in popularity.

They may even be taking aim at the 2025 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup which is to be staged in fellow COSAFA nation Seychelles in May next year, and which will see two qualifiers from the continent outside of the hosts.
