Malawi select experienced trio for COSAFA Castle Cup

Malawi coach Ronny van Geneugden will go for experience at the 2017 COSAFA Castle Cup as he seeks to win the regional showpiece tournament for The Flames for the first time.

The Belgian coach has called-up the South African-based trio of striker Gabadinho Mhango, defender Limbikani Mzava and midfielder Gerald Phiri Jnr, all experienced campaigners, for the June 25-July 9 tournament.

Also called up are former Jomo Cosmos midfielder Micium Mhone and experienced goalkeeper Charles Swini. The latter is the oldest member of the squad at 32 years of age, with the youngest being 19-year-old midfielder Denis Chembezi.

Malawi have been drawn in Group A alongside Angola, Mauritius and East African guest nation Tanzania.

They will meet the latter in the opening game of the tournament on Sunday at the Moruleng Stadium in South Africa’s North West province.

“COSAFA will give us a nice opportunity to grow. My target is to win all games. That’s what sports is all about you want to win each and every game,” Van Geneugden told reporters last week.

“The win against Comoros [on June 10] is a big motivation to the team. We saw how the boys were patriotic and to me it was an impressive performance. We would want to maintain that performance at the COSAFA Cup.”
