Angola have sealed their place in the semifinals of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations | COSAFA Qualifier after a 1-0 victory over Mozambique in their Group A clash in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The Angolans came out on top in the Lusophone derby after a lone second-half strike from Jose Baptiste handed them the three points and top spot in the pool
It keeps them on track to qualify for the continental finals next year, with the two finalists in Johannesburg advancing to the African stage, where they will in turn hope to earn a place in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
Malawi and Lesotho have been eliminated despite the latter winning 3-2 in a five-goal thriller in the other match in Group A.
Third-placed Lesotho lost two games against Angola and Mozambique but redeemed themselves against Malawi where they collected three points. Having drawn two games against Angola and Mozambique, Malawi are dumped out of the competition after losing to Lesotho and have only garnered two points to finish bottom of Group A.
Both teams started the game on an equal footing but Lesotho were the first to score. Thuto Khetsi was tackled a yard away from the edge of the penalty area on the left side and he took the free kick and netted beating the goalkeeper at the near post to break the deadlock.
Malawi players took shots from afar and the notable one was from James Lumbe who hit the crossbar.
Malawi were strong in the midfield where holding midfielder Moffat Mnyontho controlled the tempo of the match and provided forward and diagonal passes to the wingers and striker on both sides. In the midfield also, Khetsi had his own moments where he drove the ball before supplying the forwards with vertical passes.
In the 26th minute, Rethabile Nqoko doubled Lesotho’s lead after outpacing defenders before beating the onrushing Malawi’s goalkeeper. However, Malawi were determined to score and eventually reduced the deficit in the 41st minute when pacey James Lumbe drove the ball into the penalty area leaving defenders who tracked him to score against the onrushing Lesotho’s goalkeeper.
Malawi started as the stronger side in the second half but against the run of play, Khetsi delivered a cross from the left into the penalty area where Rethabile Nqoko outjumped the defenders to head the ball into the net in the 54th minute.
After conceding the third goal, Malawi never slowed down but kept on attacking. They attacked in numbers in search of a second goal to cut the deficit and in the 77th minute, they were awarded a penalty after the Lesotho’s defender handled the ball in the penalty area.
In the 79th minute, Yusufu Nantunga scored the second goal for Malawi from the penalty spot.
Lesotho then formed a deep defensive block in the last 10 minutes to close down spaces that Malawi might exploit as they were firing on all cylinders in search of an equalizer.
All games at the competition will be streamed live on FIFA+, and you can follow the action from this dedicated tournament page.
Mozambique became the first team to confirm their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 COSAFA Under-17 Girls Championships after defeating Lesotho 2-0 in the final Group A clash in Soweto.

The girls from the Mountain Kingdom had better opportunities to score but were let down by the final touch in the final third especially in the first half and were made to rue the missed chances.
