Day one of the 2024 HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Women’s Championship saw Eswatini record their biggest victory at the tournament beating debutantes Seychelles 6-0 in the opening match, before hosts South Africa edged neighbours Namibia 1-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday.
Tenanile Ngcamphalala scored a hat-trick, one goal coming in the first half and the other two in the second stanza, while captain Celiwe Nkambule grabbed a brace and Nokuthula Ndlovu scored the other one.
The score could have been higher as coach Bongani Makhukhula’s charges had a goal disallowed in the first half.
In the later kick-off, hosts South Africa scored late on to defeat 2022 semi-finalist Namibia. Banyana have brought a fairly inexperienced squad that could not convert several chances, especially in the opening half.
Keisha Hendricks was guilty of missing the target but with Tshegofatso Motlogelwa marshalling the midfield, they were largely on top.
Hendricks did find the back of the net in the early stages of the second period but was flagged offside.
Zenatha Coleman showed leadership and experience for the Brave Gladiators, setting up Irene Kooper, but the latter was unlucky to not find the back of the net.
It was the Coleman-Kooper combination again in the dying minutes of the game with the captain setting up her teammate, who was denied by the woodwork. Banyana had an immediate reaction with a quick counterattack and Isabella Ludwig set up Motlogelwa, who finally broke the deadlock to take the points.
Eswatini top Group A with three points, followed by Banyana Banyana in second on goal-difference.
Day two will see Group B get under way with Madagascar and Mauritius opening proceedings at 12h00 CAT (10h00 GMT) and defending champions Malawi taking on Botswana in the second match of the day at 15h00 CAT.
Meanwhile, due to water damage caused by recent heavy rains in Nelson Mandela Bay, there has been a change of venues for matches in the coming days. Plans to move to the Gelvandale Stadium from Wednesday have been shelved due to extensive water damage.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is unavailable having been pre-booked for other events. Instead, the matches will be played as follows:
* Fixtures from October 23-25 will now take place at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium.
* Fixtures from October 26-29 will take place at the Madibaz Stadium at the Nelson Mandela University.
* The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will be used as an alternate venue for the simultaneous kick-offs in Group A and Group B on October 28.
* The semi-finals (October 31) and final (November 2) will be played at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium as planned.

L’Eswatini en roue libre, l’Afrique du Sud timide
C’est sur les chapeaux de roue qu’a démarré l’édition 2024 de la Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Championship avec une victoire écrasante de l’Eswatini sur les novices seychelloises (6-0). L’Afrique du Sud a, elle, réalisé le hold-up parfait contre la Namibie en s’imposant 1-0.
C’est le Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium qui accueillait les deux premiers matchs de la journée inaugurale. Sous pression dans un groupe A qui comporte l’Afrique du Sud et la Namibie, l’Eswatini a démarré pied au plancher en ouvrant le score dès la 3e minute par l’entremise de Celiwe Dlamini. Cette dernière profitait d’une mauvaise sortie de la gardienne seychelloise pour débloquer le compteur. Elle trouvera le cadre à la 53e minute une nouvelle fois alors que sa partenaire Tenanile Ngcamphalala a inscrit un triplé au cours de ce match. Elle a d’abord frappé à la 47e minute puis après l’heure de jeu et enfin à la 65e minute. Ndlovu a bouclé le festival à la 69e minute.
Dans le deuxième match, l’Afrique du Sud a patienté jusqu’à la 84e minute pour empocher les trois points de la victoire. L’unique but de la rencontre est venu par le truchement de Motlogelwa. Les deux équipes se sont rendues coup pour coup et les actions ont été d’un très bon niveau. Mais la défense sud-africaine s’est révélée être une cathédrale imprenable pour les Namibiennes qui devront se rattraper à leur prochaine sortie.
Madagascar revient est présent pour la deuxième année consécutive après avoir manqué les trois tournois précédents. Leur retour à l’événement COSAFA marque un nouveau départ et une chance pour l’équipe de se remettre sur les rails et de reconstruire ce qui avait été une incursion prometteuse dans le football féminin.
Ce mercredi, Madagascar affronte Maurice à midi au Wolfson Stadium. Madagascar a véritablement pris son envol en 2019, battant les Comores 5-1, mais a également perdu contre le Malawi (2-0) et l’Afrique du Sud (3-0). Après avoir manqué trois ans de compétition, leur retour en 2023 a été difficile, car ils ont perdu tous leurs trois matchs contre l’Eswatini (2-1), l’Afrique du Sud (3-1) et le Malawi (3-1), mais peuvent affirmer qu’ils ont été compétitifs dans un groupe très difficile qui comprenait les futurs vainqueurs.
Cela montre leur riche potentiel et, espérons-le, avec quelques années de compétition soutenue, ils pourront le réaliser. En face, Maurice participe à sa 4e COSAFA Women’s Championship et cherchera à obtenir son premier point après trois apparitions décevantes dans le passé. Les insulaires ont perdu tous leurs neuf matchs joués jusqu’ici et sont l’équipe la moins bien classée de la compétition cette année, mais ils seront désespérés de montrer leurs progrès et les grandes avancées réalisées dans le football féminin dans le pays.
A 15h, le Botswana sera aux prises avec le Malawi. Les Malawites reviennent avec la ferme intention de conserver leur titre. Attention toutefois au Botswana qui commence à émerger sur la scène africaine.
Eswatini arrasa Seychelles e África do Sul faz serviços mínimos
Uma entrada avassaladora do Eswatini permitiu que conquistasse três pontos, após impor uma goleada as Seychelles por expressivos 6-0, na ronda inaugural do Grupo A, referente ao Campeonato Feminino HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA-2024. Um bis de Celiwe Nkambule (3´ e 62´), um “hat-trick” de Tenanile Ngcamphalala ( 47´,53´ e 65´) e um golo de Nokuthula Ndlovu (69´) abriram caminho para o incontestável triunfo sobre as insulares, que se estrearam no evento regional com o sabor amargo.
De resto, este foi o resultado volumoso do dia, uma vez que a anfitriã, África do Sul, venceu, hoje, pela margem mínima, a sua congénere da Namíbia, por 1-0, mercê do golo solitário de Tshogofatso Motlogelwa marcado a passagem do minuto 83.
Com estes resultados, Eswatini e África do Sul partilham os mesmos pontos,na primeira e segunda posições, respectivamente, enquanto Namíbia e Seychelles ocupam o terceiro e quarto lugar, sem nenhum ponto.
Na próxima jornada as sul-africanas enfrentam as representantes do Reino no Eswatini no dia 25, às 15:00 horas, no Wolfson Stadium, partida esta que será antecedida com embate entre Namíbia e Seychelles (12:00 horas).
Pela primeira vez, as 14 nações da COSAFA competem juntas nesta prestigiada prova, tornando-a a maior competição sénior feminina no continente africano.
Pela primeira vez neste ano, o Árbitro Assistente de Vídeo (VAR) será utilizado a partir dos jogos finais da fase de grupos, uma vez que a formação dos árbitros na região para utilizar esse sistema permitiu que um maior número de jogos se beneficiasse dessa tecnologia.
Entretanto, amanhã, os primeiros jogos do Grupo B ocorrerão no Wolfson Stadium, com Madagáscar enfrentando os insulares das Maurícias às 12:00 horas, seguindo depois as atuais campeãs, Malawi, que medirão forças com a sua congénere do Botswana em um confronto crucial que pode ter repercussões no topo do grupo.
As insulares das Maurícias é a equipa com a classificação mais baixa na competição deste ano, ocupando o 194º lugar mundial e o 46º em África, mas não será por isso que não darão a cara a luta.
Entretanto, as actuais detentoras do título, estão em Gqeberha para defender a coroa conquistada em 2023, impulsionados pelos golos da talentosa atacante Temwa Chawinga.
As malauianas, por sua vez, enfrentaram desafios complicados com o Botswana ao longo dos anos, incluindo um empate 1-1 em 2022 e uma derrota por 2-0 em 2018. Por outro lado, têm dominado os confrontos com Madagáscar, vencendo em todas as três ocasiões em que se encontraram no evento regional desde 2018, com vitórias de 2-0 e 3-1 no caminho para o título no ano passado.
Apenas os quatro vencedores de cada grupo avançam para as meias-finais, portanto, não há margem para erros.
No entanto, os Grupos C e D, compostos por três equipes cada, iniciarão suas campanhas na quinta-feira. As tradicionais favoritas, Zâmbia, terão um confronto contra Angola no Estádio Gelvandale às 12:00 horas. Enquanto isso, no Grupo D, Moçambique enfrentará o Zimbabwe às 15:00 horas, no mesmo recinto.
A Zâmbia atingiu as meias-finais em cada uma das últimas sete participações na competição, conquistando a vitória há dois anos, além de duas medalhas de prata e três de bronze. Foram vice-campeãs frente ao Malawi na última edição.
Angola foi finalista em casa em 2008, mas tem tido dificuldades para avançar desde então. Comores participaram em quatro dos últimos cinco campeonatos, porém não conseguiram chegar às fases finais.
O Grupo D promete ser altamente competitivo. Zimbabwe venceu o torneio em casa em 2011 e conquistou também duas medalhas de prata. Terminaram em quarto lugar no ano passado, sendo ultrapassados pela medalha de bronze por Moçambique, que alcançou a sua melhor classificação de sempre.
