Hosts Angola kicked off their AUSC Region 5 Youth Games men’s competition with a 1-0 defeat to Zimbabwe in a hot and humid Luanda on Saturday.
Zimbabwe got the early goal through Denzel Khumala in the ninth minute after some great combination play in the middle of the park.
The hosts only had themselves to blame for not finding an equaliser after countless missed chances and some bad luck, as they struck the woodwork as well.
In the other game in the men’s competition on Saturday, Zambia left it to the second half when they beat Swaziland 1-0 after a beautiful shot from outside the box from Damiano Kola in the 66th minute.
This match had all the ingredients of a thrilling encounter, however both teams struggled to convert the numerous chances they created throughout the game.
In the women’s competition, Namibia find themselves on three points behind South Africa on goal-difference only following their impressive 2-0 win over Zimbabwe.
A goal from Millicent Hikuam in the 26th minute and a Memory Ngonda penalty on the stroke of halftime gave Namibia the win.
They now face South Africa in what is expected to be an fierce tussle on Monday. Sunday is a rest day for the football tournament.
